Hi all,

I need readings to improve my knowledge about the way we perceive colour.

Any suggestions?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi,

I think you should try this:
Vision and Art, The Biology of Seeing by Margaret Livingstone
ISBN 0-8109-0406-3
It's a very good way to start.

Fernando

There are many resources you can find on the web. Some I frequent are:

http://colorlab.wickline.org/colorblind/colorlab/
http://www.iamcal.com/toys/colors/index.php
http://www.designmatrix.com/pl/cyberpl/cftcb.html

Hope they help.

List member Ron Bean put together a nice list of such books, along with some quotations from each one. You can find it posted at

Check out http://www.purveslab.net/  . This is the perception lab at Duke University. Dr. Purvis has some really impressive demonstrations there that will fool almost any color expert. He's co-authored an in-depth book on human perception as well.

The classic book, aged but fundamental, is "The Perception of Colors" by Ralph Evans, Wiley (1974).

Dear Mauro,

It appears that Ralph Merrill Evans' "The Perception of Color" is no longer available either new or used from Wiley, Amazon, or EBay.

The only place where I was able to find it here in the West Coast is the Optometry Dept. Library at U.C. Berkeley.

On the other hand, I was able to find a paper written recently on this very book by Rod L. Heckaman and Mark D. Fairchild (of RIT's Munsell Color Science Laboratory), where they sum up the main ideas in it. You can find the PDF file for this paper at the following URL:

http: //www.cis.rit.edu/mcsl/research/PDFs/HeckamanFairchild1.pdf

Please let me know how well they sum up the book, in your opinion.

Tanti cari saluti.

Dear Marco,

you can buy (a used copy of) the book from Alibris or Abebooks:

Thanks for point it out to me. I didn't know this paper, but seems very interesting  to me. An excellent appendix and updating to the book. I will read it next days.

Grazie e ciao.
